Cadillac, Michigan, has found itself at the center of a growing concern: PFAS contamination. Often referred to as "forever chemicals," PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic compounds that can persist in the environment and accumulate over time in the human body. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to various health risks, and their presence in water sources is a pressing issue for communities across the state.
Understanding the Cadillac PFAS Issue
Recent investigations by the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) and other agencies revealed elevated PFAS levels in private wells within the Cadillac Industrial Park Area. While the city’s municipal water system has tested PFAS-free, more and more private wells in the region have exceeded both state and federal drinking water criteria.
The contamination stems from historical industrial activities in the area, including plating operations that utilized PFAS chemicals. Testing has been ongoing, with results showing varying levels of contamination across the small study area. Additional rounds of testing and expanded sampling areas are expected in Spring of 2025 as officials work to identify and address affected properties.
To provide relief, Cadillac city officials are distributing free bottled water and offering complimentary point-of-use water filters for your kitchen to impacted residents, but only if their testing comes back positive and you are inside one of the focus areas. However, these measures are interim solutions as long-term plans to expand the municipal water system are developed.
