How a Heat Pump Works

Heat pumps are actually quite simple and have been around for many years. In fact, your air conditioner is a heat pump, pulling warm air out of your house. The same technology works in reverse during the winter months, allowing your home to draw warm air from outside and heat the indoor air to keep you comfortable. You may not think there’s warmth hidden in all of the cold winter air, but there is, and heat pumps are designed specifically for capturing it and transferring it to your home.

In effect, all air has energy in it, even when the temperature is very cold. A heat pump works by drawing the energy from that air and exchanging it through condensers into another environment — in this case, the air in your home. Heated air is then circulated through your house via a series of ducts.

The best part about a heat pump is that it works during the summer to draw the warm air out of your house, effectively cooling your indoor air. No other home comfort system provides both heating and cooling simultaneously.
